Before getting into the stress concerns of standardized testing we would love to know what does the standardized testing actually means? Well, it is simply a test containing series of multiple choice questions. Thousands of test takers can fill out these MCQs at once and then these tests are graded by scanning machines in a blink of an eye. Standardized test can be taken either on a paper or on a computer but the theme of test remains same no matter where the student is taking it.
Stress of standardized testing on teachers and students:
The stress begins when a school or teacher expresses how important this test is to the student’s future. Most standardized tests such as gmat, fcat, or sat decide not only if your children will be able to go to an accredited college, but if your child can even graduate from high school. This immense amount of pressure is the real killer that paralyzes some students to the point of poor performance.
This is very much true that standardized testing creates stress effects on students. According to some critics, standardized testing can be potentially harmful for children. Standardized testing exerts a typical type of pressure on students, which some students are unable to take. Because of this, many children are seen vomiting, crying and acting out violently during the test. Children feel extreme physical and emotional stress while taking this type of tests, which is observed by many educators.
Teachers normally do not feel any kind of physical stress while giving standardized tests but there is a mental stress that annoys teachers a lot in this type of tests. What is that mental stress? Well, standardized tests always make educators think that they are not delivering their best! Of course they don’t have to do the hectic checking of papers in this type of tests but what make them mentally stressed is the thought that they are not exploring their students well. Teachers also have to limit their curricula which also make them think that they are not preparing their students well for the future challenging needs.
Parents complaining how students are graded:
Standardized testing has forced parents to think and complaint about few things. They are always complaining that this test can not judge the hidden talents of their kid. Parents are protesting that their children are being graded only for what they have taught by teachers in a very limited range. These tests do not allow students to show what they have got in their guts. They can’t explain, they can’t illustrate even they can’t write a few lines to explain their concepts. Based on all these solid reasons, parents now a day are seriously protesting how students are being graded. According to them this test is unable to relate the grades of any student with his mental capabilities.
